If someone started talking about things that are cool, the conversation would involve the latest tech gadgets, expensive sports cars, exotic vacations and Fonzie. Roofs? Roofs would be completely left out of the conversation. But roofs can be cool. In fact, there is a Cool Roof Rating Council that gives a numeric value to roofs in order to let everyone know how cool the roof is. These aren’t style points, though. And these cool roofs won’t star in the next Hollywood blockbuster. They can, however, keep your energy costs down. That’s really cool!
The term ‘cool roof’ refers to a roof that reflects and emits the heat from the sun back into the atmosphere instead of transferring it to the building below. The Cool Roof Rating Council will assign a number between zero and one: the higher the number, the cooler the roof.
Cool roofs are typically made from materials that reflect the sun’s rays up to four times more than standard roofing materials. It is the same idea as wearing a lighter colored shirt in order to stay cooler. Since less heat is being absorbed by the home, the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the living space at a comfortable temperature. This results in a 7% – 15% savings on a monthly power bill. A cool roof will last also last longer than a standard roof. Excessive heat will cause asphalt shingles to become brittle and more susceptible to wind and hail damage.
Cool roofs come in a variety of materials and colors. It is logical to assume that all cool roofs are lighter colored, but the synthetic reflective material is so effective that cool roofs can be darker colors too. These roofing materials will reflect the parts of light spectrum that is invisible to the human eye but carry a lot of heat. This allows for darker colored roofs to still be a cool roof.
Excel Roofing believes roofs are cool. The right roof can save money, last longer, lower the insurance premium and increase the home’s value. If you have questions about cool roofs or just want to talk roofing, we think that would be very cool.
