Should I Get Gutter Covers?

During the spring, the advertising for gutter covers becomes more prevalent. The thought of never needing to climb on a ladder and scoop leaves and dirt from the gutter is very attractive.

How well they work is a matter of debate.

Consumer Reports did a 16 month comparison of over 20 different types of systems to not only test their effectiveness, but to also test which system was the best.

The result of the study was revealing. They found the systems tend to cause rain to over shoot the gutters in heavy downpours, or contribute to clogging problems on top of the gutters.

Average costs of $20 to $30 per foot, these pro-installed systems tested would cost $3,000 to $5,000 for the roughly 160 feet needed on an average-sized home.

The Consumer Reports Best Buy/Recommended category of protection turned out to be the Amerimax gutter screens which are available at the Big Box stores. These Do-it-Yourself screens cost 30 to 40 cents per foot, totaling around $560.00 for the home owner willing to do the job themselves.

The Consumer Reports study confirms what Excel Roofing has seen over the years: there is no perfect gutter protection system.

We have tried different systems over the years and are yet to see one that drains properly in heavy downpours and does not clog over time. Gutter protection on a home that is prone to ice dams tends to make any ice dam problems worse.

Excel believes the best solution is to have the gutters cleaned at least once a year.

Either hire Excel Roofing to get them cleaned, or get out your ladder or Gutter Clutter Buster and clean them yourself. Excel Roofing ‘s standard charge is $199 for a one-story home, $299 for a two-story home.

ARE GUTTER COVERS THE ULTIMATE GUTTER CLEANING SOLUTION?

More and more homeowners are investing in gutter protection systems. The thought of never needing to climb on your roof and scoop leaves and dirt from the gutter is very attractive. The folks that make and sell these systems are all too quick to back these claims. But are these claims accurate?

Right now there are over 50 different types of gutter protection systems on the market. Consumer Reports did a 16 month comparison of over 20 different types of systems to not only test their effectiveness, but to also test which system was the best.
