Gutter Cleaning

Spring is in the air.  Birds, bees, flowers, trees and . . . gutters.  Yes, gutters!

A gutter inspection should be a part of everyone’s spring chores as a clogged gutter will only cause problems if left unattended.  So get out and inspect and clean those gutters before the April showers bring May flowers.

Unless the debris is piled high in the gutter, most gutter clogs won’t be visible from the ground.  You may see the effects of a gutter clog after it damages your home.

Gutter Clogs

Often times a clogged gutter will cause the water to seep over the back of the gutter and into the fascia board.  If you see signs of moisture behind the gutter this is an indication of a clogged gutter.   Water can damage the fascia, soffit, the siding and even leak into your home and damage the drywall.

This damage happens slowly and can cause thousands of dollars in damage before you know it.

A basement that has been flooded due to clogged and overflowing gutters is a disaster!  To make matters worse this disaster is not covered by insurance.

Overflowing water can also collect around the home’s foundation.  Water against the foundation of a home can cause the soil to expand and contract breaking the foundation of your home.   Moisture in your basement can lead to problems with mold.

Clogged gutters and downspouts tend to be the primary cause of these problems.

During a rain shower the water in a clogged gutter will overflow.  This can lead to problems such as washed-out landscaping and cracked pavement.  Ideally, the water will flow down the downspout and drain away from your home through a tipout.

The tipout is the extension on the end of a downspout and should move the water at least four feet away from the home’s foundation.    Splash blocks can also be used to divert the water away from your home.

Either method works, just make sure the water is not running back towards your home.

SO Here’s More Tips

Did you know that clogged gutters can make your roof appear to have a leak?

water damage from gutter leakExcel Roofing has received many phone calls over the years where customers think their roof is leaking, but it’s actually just a clogged gutter.

Clogged gutters will make water leak behind the gutter and into the home. If the problem is not fixed, it will cause the paint on the soffit and fascia to peel away and the wood to rot like in the picture.

The best time to check your gutters is during a rain storm.

The last time it rained I noticed that my gutters were overflowing, and I knew it was time to clean them out.

“I knew this that this would be a somewhat of a process because the downspout needed to be taken apart. So I waited for a dry, sunny day and got the ladder and my cordless drill and took apart the screws on the downspouts.

The task was even more difficult because heat cable is running through the downspout. I took apart the downspout and was able to clean out the pine needles and other debris, while being very careful to not damage the heat cable.” – Excel Roofing Customer

This is one of those tasks that should be done in the fall so that the water will drain properly all winter.

Another important point to know is that if your basement floods with water coming in through the basement windows, it’s not covered by insurance. We have seen clogged gutters overflow and flood into the basement.

It’s important to keep your gutters clean so this doesn’t happen to you.We make it simple. If you think your gutters are clogged, call Excel Roofing for a gutter cleaning today.

Different Types of Gutters

Clogged Gutters Cause Serious Problems
Especially in the Fall

Why is the season after summer called Fall?

Because the leaves “fall” from the trees and into your gutters! All summer long, your gutters did their job: moving water off the roof of your house and away from the foundation. Now it’s time to reward the gutters after six months of dedicated service.

Excel Roofing hates clogged gutters.

Clogged gutters can cause roof leaks, interior damage and concrete foundation problems. Water near your home causes soil expansion that cracks basement foundation walls and costs homeowners thousands of dollars.

So now you know why it’s important to keep your gutters clean, but climbing a ladder just to stick your hand into a pile of God-knows-what stacked in your gutters . . . well, let’s just say you’d rather do something else.

Diving Even Deeper in Gutter Cleaning

Gutter screens and gutter covers sound like a great solution, but Excel Roofing doesn’t agree.

We’ve seen a gutter or two in our day and we’ve never seen a better gutter solution than simply cleaning them out by hand. Why is that?

Well, a gutter screen or gutter cover will limit the capacity of water a gutter can move.

Unfortunately, gutter screens get clogged and gutter covers cause the rainwater to overshoot the gutters during heavy downpours. An uncovered and unclogged gutter will ALWAYS operate at full capacity.

And as a homeowner, that’s what you want.

How often should gutters be cleaned? That depends on your landscaping.

If your home has no trees close to it just get out a ladder and take a look. If there is no debris in the gutter, don’t worry. Just make sure to check at least once a year. If you have a couple of trees near your home then the gutters will need to be cleaned once a year.

Three or more trees next to your home mean your gutters will need cleaning twice a year.

Excel Roofing offers a gutter cleaning service. We will come out and thoroughly clean your gutters and take a look at the condition of your roof too.  If you have underground drains, you should consider the Excel Roofing Downspout Cleanout System.

The gutters on your home perform the important task of moving rainwater off the roof and away from your home’s foundation. A clogged gutter will only lead to bigger problems down the road.

The best and most cost-effective method of keeping your gutters clean is to pay someone to clean your gutters annually.

What If Shingles/Granules Get In Your Gutter?

asphalt shingle with granule loss
asphalt shingle with granule loss

Q: When I was cleaning my gutters over the weekend, I found asphalt shingle granules in the gutters.  It looked like a lot to me.  Do I need to fix my roof or replace it?

A: Probably not.

The granules on the shingles just get loose over time.

Wind, rain and snow will cause them to come loose and collect in your gutters (or at the base of your downspout).  This is perfectly normal and the term for it is simply “fall-off.”

The granules are added to asphalt shingles as a protective measure against UV rays and also as a fire retardant.  These granules are constantly exposed to the elements and there is just no way they will all stay stuck to the shingles year after year.

In fact, washing a brand new asphalt roof will cause a lot of “fall-off” to build up.  So if you find a buildup of granules in the gutters or on the ground, don’t panic!

However, if your roof is an older roof it would be worth your time to just walk it and take a look.  If you see shingles where most of the granules are gone, those shingles will need to be replaced.  The granules provide a layer of protection and without them, the shingle is left exposed and will deteriorate quickly.

It is normal to see asphalt granules in the gutters or even on the ground.

But if you are unsure and think your roof may need an inspection, give us a call and we will let you know the condition of your roof — at no cost to you!
